The airfield is situated in the new Cape Town FACT FIR. The airspace over Gariep Dam is Class F uncontrolled to FL195.
European glider pilots find the uncontrolled airspace allocated, akin to paradise.
Intensive gliding operations take place from November until February, so pilots in the vicinity of the airfield are advised to keep a good look out and call on both 124,8 and 123,4 MHz. From time to time there may be other flying events at Gariep Dam and pilots are advised to consult the latest NOTAMs and to keep a good lookout. The major ATC centres can advise of the status of any major flying activity at Gariep Dam. |
