Gariep Gliding FieldTo locate the airfield visually from the air, fly NNE from the dam wall, over the town of Gariepdam. The airfield is nestled in the middle of the valley approximately 1 mile E of the N1 and 3 miles NNE of the dam wall. By road take the N1 turnoff to Gariepdam, turn left into the main entrance to the town, pass the garage on the right, take the next tarmac road to the left, turn left onto a dirt road after 1km just before the suburb of Hydropark. The airfield is a further 4 km down this road in the middle of the valley. Look for silver hangar.

AIRSPACE

The airfield is situated in the new Cape Town FACT FIR.

The airspace over Gariep Dam is Class F uncontrolled to FL195.

Glider Parking areaWith the recently reduced size of the Bleomfontein and Kimberly TMA and CTA, Gariep Dam traffic has a huge amount of uncontrolled airspace at its disposal, mostly up to FL195, which is frequently reached under summer conditions. During the gliding season, arrangements are made with ATC to traverse the high level airways to the west and east. Mostly, large gliding tasks are set out to the west, but now it is possible to fly to the north and all the way around Kimberly or Bloemfontein, remaining in uncontrolled airspace the whole time.

European glider pilots find the uncontrolled airspace allocated, akin to paradise.

AIR TRAFFIC

Gariep DamAir traffic is minimal. Aircraft visiting Gariep Dam out of the holiday season are presently only 2 or 3 arrivals per day. During peak season this rises to around 6 per day. Glider pilots flying to the west over the Karoo, seldom see any other traffic all day.

Intensive gliding operations take place from November until February, so pilots in the vicinity of the airfield are advised to keep a good look out and call on both 124,8 and 123,4 MHz.

From time to time there may be other flying events at Gariep Dam and pilots are advised to consult the latest NOTAMs and to keep a good lookout. The major ATC centres can advise of the status of any major flying activity at Gariep Dam.
